Anlässlich des 200-Jahr-Jubiläums von Thonet lädt das MAK zu einer Zeitreise durch das moderne Möbeldesign. Die von Michael Thonet entwickelten Bugholzmöbel schrieben Stilgeschichte und begründeten eine der erfolgreichsten Möbelmarken der Welt. Ende der 1920er-Jahre stieg Thonet dann auch in das Geschäft mit Stahlrohrmöbeln ein, das bis heute ein wichtiges Standbein der Firmenproduktion bildet. Ausstellung und Buch kontextualisieren das Thonet-Programm mit vielen wichtigen Werken der Möbelgeschichte. So werden die Thonet-Möbel über eine chronologische Gesamtschau hinaus erstmals in die technologische, typologische, ästhetische und historische Entwicklung des Möbeldesigns eingebettet. Ergänzt durch Leihgaben aus internationalen Sammlungen zeigt das Buch über 300 Exponate, die überwiegend neu fotografiert wurden.

On the occasion of the 200th anniversary of the world-famous company Thonet, the MAK invites visitors to take a journey through time and modern furniture design. The bentwood furniture developed by Michael Thonet made style history and served as the foundation of one of the world’s most successful furniture brands. At the end of the 1920s, Thonet also entered the tubular steel furniture business, which continues to be an important pillar of the company's production to this day. A chronological overview of Thonet furniture is complemented for the first time by embedding the works in the technological, typological, aesthetic and historical development of furniture design. Complemented by loans from international collections, the book shows more than 300 exhibits, most of which were newly photographed.
